Contemporary Quartets for 4 Violins

Violin Quartet

The Music for 4 Violins series was created to help bring students together so that they can play in the true sense of the word. I want to help fill their lives with energetic and gratifying new music that is in touch with the pulse of their generation.

Volume 2 is intended for violinists with more fluency in 3rd, 4th, and 5th positions and has compositions that explore a richer emotional realm than Volume 1.

Compositional features that are presented in this volume include:
Highly melodic and pulse-oriented motifs.

Mixed meter writing and 5/8 and 7/8
time signatures.

Compositional writing that is
idiosyncratic to the violin.

Fun extended techniques: harmonics,
col legno, slides, and foot stomps.
Samples of the score only are below. The full collection contains the score + parts.

Please note that only the first few pages of each piece are viewable.

Mazzy Panks -
The title is from made up words and meant to invoke a world of fun and fantasy. This piece is perfect for a performance group and for extra creative musicians would be great to choreograph.

Go Tell Aunt Rhody, arrangement -As an improviser, I love adding extra flourishes and altering rhythms. This arrangement is an extension of the fun Ihave improvising and turns a simple beginner piece into a fancy challenge.

Spangled –This piece was commissioned by the District Strings Suzuki String tour group at the Levine School of Music in Washington DC. The title comes from “Star Spangled Banner” and is a reference to the patriotic symbol of our American flag and was inspired by the group itself being located in the nation’s capital.  I composed the piece in 5/8 meter because it gives such a sparkly or “spangled” feeling to the music.

Sleep, Sleep –I composed this piece during the last year of my beloved grandfather’s life. His last year was very uncomfortable, and I used the music to express some of the complexities I experienced while processing this transition. I ended the composition with peaceful, sustained resolve as a way of praying for this experience for my grandfather who was in pain.

The Twinkle Arrangements based on composers -
These are playful homages to some wonderful composers that have contributed so richly to our musical heritage and a sweet choice for combining players of multiple levels into a single ensemble.
