This is a great little 2-minute nugget for older students (like teens and adults) and works for many things beyond the violin. In fact, I have a cold this weekend and would rather be laying in bed all day but don't want to get too far behind so I just used this advice to clean my kitchen, finish my homework for my nursing program and walk my dog. Below is a 2-minute video of some advice my teacher gave me in graduate school. It has served me well in all areas of my life. Happy practicing and feel free to share your "best" practice advice in the comments below.

A professional mentor told me, after listening to me "run through" an etude (I was trying out violins for sale), "Play your etudes as if they are your [performance] pieces."

Fantastic! I love this mindshift and invitation to fully integrate artistry into etudes. Thank you so much for passing this along!

Heather, You inspire me. I actually have 22 cello students but can use so much of what you talk about and share on your website with my little cellists!

That's great, Heather! Thank you! Here's another one - When something seems really hard ... remember that you can do hard things! My own kids never liked when I said this to them, but it's true! Reminds me of the Winnie the Pooh quote "You're braver than you believe and stronger and smarter than you think."
